Notes: Label source: Name sent 18.vii.84 D.gnidium, L. mentioned by Greshoff in his monograph of plants used for fish poisons Stapf. Letter Dated 15th July 1904, Castle Hale, Painswick, Glos. Dear Sir, May I venture to trespass upon your valuable time by asking, whether from the enclosed somewhat dried sample you can tell me the species and perhaps further about this plant. I picked it up on the Campagne di Roma near the coast. It is there styled by the peasants and poachers 'Pamura'. Its root turns water white,, as does sal-volatile; it drives the fish in the river Incastro to the sea when thrown into the water. Hence it is employed by the village-folk and others as a means of fish-taking and they are forbidden to use it by Government order or to plant it anywhe, re. It grows about 2 feet in height perhaps more. Believe me to be and prospectively, if I may say so, gratefully yours St Clair Baddeley.
